Adventures of an Altaholic

Hello, my name is Elwen and I'm an altaholic.  I have 23 level 85 characters on Trollbane (Alliance and Horde) and I'm still leveling characters.  I have even gone to other servers to make new characters and new guilds to put them in.  A lof of them just sit there until I feel like playing them again but I do eventually get around to them.

Right now I discovered on the World of Warcraft forums this things a bunch of players thought up to make this game a little more interesting.  Level a toon from 1 - 85 in white/grey gear only, no talent points - using only the abilities you get from your trainer, no glyphs, no enchants, no potions/elixirs/flasks, etc., no grouping to do quests, no dungeons/bgs/raids, etc. and NO DEATHS.  This is a permadeath challenge - once you die you are dead and to be deleted (okay, I got a pally to 44 before I got killed and just couldn't delete her so I kept her for leveling later and rolled a new one).

Once Blizzard saw what we were doing, a blue blogged about it and it exploded.  Hundreds of players rolled toons and are doing this on a myriad of servers.  I am playing on a role-playing server (which is were the original group started this thing) and I have taken it to heart.  I have started a journal for my new pally (Karimetra) and am posting it on the ironman WoW forums (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/4015202822 ) and on the ironman message board under Lore some players created (http://wowironmanchallenge.proboards.com/index.cgi#general ) or you can read in here by clicking on Adventures of an Atlaholic link below.

WELCOME TO TOO CUTE TO DIE!

We are a relaxed guild intent on enjoying all aspects of the game.  We like to quest and are working on getting our higher level toons geared for the end game instances.  We are a firm believer in helping each other reach our goals within and without the game.  We have a vent server which is for the guild members’ use only.  We have a guild bank with all 6 tabs open.  Most of our members have been playing the game for several years and as such are able to help our new members who might not have played as long and are new to the game.

We have no limit on the number of alts you may have in the guild but we do ask that you have your main character as a member in the guild.  We have no cap or requirement on the class or level of characters that are able to join.  We also have no requirement on the amount of time you are to spend on the toon in the guild as we know that real life comes before the game and sometimes you just can't get on to play.  As there has been a lot of guild hopping by people (meaning someone joins a guild and uses them for a bit, or joins to just check out the guild bank, and leaves suddenly), membership into the guild is by an established member’s recommendation.  We are looking for quality people and players.  We want people around for the long haul.

Since we do enjoy all aspects of the game, we have a guild on the Horde side as well.  We do primarily play Alliance but there have been long periods of time that we have been on Horde instead.  It is not required that you have toons in Too Cute To Die in order to join Hordeaculture but right now, it seems that Hordeaculture is made up of alts of our Alliance people.

As the recruiters like to say in the trade chats "We have 4 bank tabs and a tabbard".  I know that's not near enough to get anyone to join us and that's fine.  We do have a lot of level 80s in the guild and will eventually get them up to 85 in order to enjoy the Catacalysm content.  The same rules and policies apply to Hordeaculture as it does Too Cute To Die.

Our intent is to create an intimate group of people that feels like family, share a common goal and help each other reach that goal.  As such you should respect your guild mates and other players that you come in contact with.  Remember, while you are a part of this guild you are our representative and your actions reflect back on the guild.  With that in mind, there are a few basic rules to follow:

GENERAL

  • Racial/religious/sexist slurs will not be tolerated.  There will be one warning and if it continues  you will be removed from the guild membership.
  • An authenticator is required to reach higher ranks and to have access to the guild bank with those higher ranks.  With all the account compromises that have been happening, it is just common sense to take the extra step to protect your account and the guild with the use of one of these items.
  • The guild does not loan money or give money to guildies for any reason.  Money is ridiculously easy to make in the game so there is no reason to not have the gold for the riding training when you reach appropriate levels.  Guildies will be more than happy to give strategies and advice in making money but are not there to be mooched off of.
  • Begging and whining is not acceptable behavior.  There is nothing wrong with asking another member to  help with something or craft you an item.  We try to help everyone when we can but there will be times that no one is available.  Deal with it and wait until someone is available to help.   If you have a quest in a particular instance, please let someone know so that we can schedule a run for that instance at an opportune time.
  • Begging for materials to work on your professions is unseemly and is to be avoided.  We will try to help you farm the materials that you need or, if available, they can be pulled from the guild bank.
  • Guild members do not charge other members for services/items.  When requesting something to be crafted for you, you should provide the materials unless the member doing to the crafting volunteers the use of his/her own materials.
  • Items pulled from the guild bank should be for your use on the toon(s) in the guild and not for sale on the Auction House or for an alt in another guild or unguilded.  Remember, items deposited into the guild bank is for the use of any member of the guild so make sure you really want to deposit that/those item(s) in the guild bank before you do so. Periodically, items that have sat in the guild bank for a long period of time will be pulled out of the guild bank and sold on the AH with the funds from those sales being deposited back into the guild bank.
  • We are always on the look out for more members, however, unfortunately, some people join a guild to get what they can out of them and then move on.  We want to avoid that.  We want our members to be happy and stay with us for the duration.  As such, invitation to join the guild should be made on a member’s recommendation.  Play with this person first and get to know them before you issue the invite.  We want to make sure it’s a good fit for everyone involved.
  • We have several ranks in the guild.  Promotion in the guild is based on time and performance.  Each rank will take approximately 3 weeks to reach which can be reduced if the member interacts and is helpful with the other guild members.  New members start out as initiates and will have no access to the guild bank.  Time spent in the guild is no guarantee of a rise in rank - i.e. initiate has been in the guild 3 weeks, has not been active in the guild and with other member, and expects to have rank raised - THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN! We expect members to be an active participant in the guild - converse with other members, play with other members, give and get help from other members, etc.

INSTANCES AND RAIDS

  • If it is a scheduled instance or raid, BE ON TIME AND READY TO GO.  This cannot be stressed enough as it is most annoying to be ready to go at a certain time and several members waste valuable time getting ready to go.  You know what time it is to begin so start getting ready about 15 minutes or so before it starts.  You don’t want to be the one to hold the entire group up.
  • Find out what the looting rules are and follow them.  If you are unsure about the rules, then ask.
  • Before you go into the instance make sure that the roles are assigned and everyone understands what is expected of them.  This will help make a smoother run.
  • Be aware of your team mates.  Make sure to take breaks to allow the mana users in the group a chance to regain mana and food buffs and class buffs to be re-established.  Not everyone will be able to go from one battle to the next without a break.
  • Stay with the group.  Do not run ahead and aggro something that the group is not yet ready to handle.  If you do aggro something do NOT lead it back to the group just take one for the team.  You do not want to be the one responsible for a wipe.  Too many of those mistakes and you will find that your reputation precedes you and you might have a hard time finding a group to play with.
  • Make sure the group is set to “Group Loot” as this will allow everyone to get a fair share of the loot.
  • Do not loot in the middle of a fight.  The bodies will remain there for several minutes.  Help bring down the mob and then loot as this will allow everyone to survive, hopefully.
  • Ninja looting (defined as waiting until everyone else has rolled greed or passed on an item and then rolling need to make sure you get it) will NOT be tolerated.  You will get one warning and if it happens again you will be removed from the guild membership.
  • When doing a guild run, when items which are BoE (bind on equip) drop, you may roll greed or pass if you don’t want the item.  If it is an item which you need, ask the group if you can need it.
  • On items that are BoP everyone will pass and it will be discussed as to who could best use that item.  If no one in the group can use the item and there is an enchanter with the group, then the enchanter will disenchant the item and the group will roll for the shard.  If there is not an enchanter in the group, then the group will roll for the item with the highest roll winning.  To roll for an item, you would type /roll in the chat window and hit enter.

This seems like a lot of rules but you will find that most of it is just common courtesy to one another.

First and foremost, remember that this is just a game and you should have fun doing it.  We are here to support each other and help each other reach our goals.

Around Azeroth The feline reaction to Patch 53 SUNDAY
As long-time readers may remember, sometimes on Sundays we like to run pictures from that strange, high-definition world outside Azeroth. This photograph was taken by Ginei of Desert Rats on Blackhand (US-A) and it captures her cat Zoe attempting to drown herself in a World of Warcraft beer glass. Presumably she just heard the news that Patch 5.3 will be released on Tuesday, and thus she will not be receiving any petting for the next month since her owner will be too absorbed in the game. Or maybe there's Bailey's Irish Cream in the glass. Cats go crazy for that stuff.

Want to see your own screenshot here? Send it to aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com. We strongly prefer full-sized pictures with no UI or names showing. Include "Azeroth" in the subject line to ensure your submission dodges email spam filters; if you'd like to be credited, also include your name, guild and realm.
